Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is a spirited tomboy raised by her widowed father, a hardworking plumber. With her late mother’s memory as her guide, Sydney embarks on her college journey at Southern Atlantic University (SAU) with the intention of pledging her mother’s sorority, Kappa Phi Nu. Excited yet nervous, Sydney hopes to connect with her mother’s legacy and carve out her own place in college life.
Upon arrival, Sydney quickly befriends Demetria Rosemead “Dinky” Hotchkiss, a fellow freshman and aspiring Kappa member. Dinky is bubbly, enthusiastic, and eager to join the sorority. Together, they prepare to face the challenges of Kappa’s notoriously difficult initiation process. Sydney’s tomboyish demeanor and straightforward personality set her apart from the other pledges, but she approaches everything with an open mind and a willingness to try.
While moving into her dorm, Sydney crosses paths with Tyler Prince, the charming and confident president of the Beta fraternity. Tyler’s charisma is matched by his genuine kindness, and he immediately takes an interest in Sydney. Their brief but meaningful interaction sparks a connection, although it doesn’t go unnoticed by Rachel Witchburn, the reigning queen of SAU. Rachel, who serves as both the Kappa president and the student council president, also happens to be Tyler’s on-again, off-again girlfriend. Rachel’s obsessive need to maintain her social dominance includes checking her ranking on SAU’s “hottest” student website daily, where she consistently holds the number one spot. Seeing Tyler’s growing interest in Sydney and noticing Sydney’s increasing popularity among students, Rachel becomes jealous and views her as a threat.
As the Kappa initiation process begins, Sydney quickly realizes that life in the sorority is more cutthroat than she imagined. Rachel ensures that Sydney is singled out during various rituals, trying to humiliate her and test her resolve. One such tradition requires each pledge to find a date late at night. Sydney, determined to prove herself, ends up inviting Lenny, a quirky and awkward member of a group known as the “seven dorks.” These social outcasts live in a run-down fraternity house called the Vortex, which serves as a refuge for students who don’t fit the traditional campus mold. Despite Lenny’s nervousness, Sydney treats him kindly and enjoys their time together. However, Rachel orders Sydney to ditch Lenny, leaving him humiliated and alone to pay the bill.
During the final stages of initiation, Rachel accuses Sydney of lying about her background and cheating on a sorority quiz, leading to her rejection from Kappa. Heartbroken and drenched from the pouring rain, Sydney finds herself sitting outside the Vortex. The seven dorks—Lenny, Terrence, Gurkin, Spanky, Jeremy, George, and Embelakpo “Embele”—invite her inside. They welcome her with open arms, offering her a place to stay and a sense of belonging. Despite their quirks and unconventional ways, Sydney quickly bonds with the group and begins to see the Vortex as her new home.
Sydney’s time at the Vortex brings her closer to the dorks and their struggles. She learns that Rachel has used her influence and student council position to marginalize groups like the dorks, enforcing a culture of elitism and exclusion on campus. Motivated to make a difference, Sydney decides to challenge Rachel’s dominance by running one of the dorks, Terrence, for student body president. Terrence’s campaign initially gains traction, but Rachel manipulates the rules to have him disqualified. Undeterred, Sydney steps in to take his place as a presidential candidate.
Sydney’s campaign focuses on promoting inclusivity and breaking down the social hierarchy at SAU. Her genuine approach resonates with students from various cliques, who begin to rally behind her. Her popularity soars, and she even surpasses Rachel to claim the top spot on the university’s “hottest” list. This only fuels Rachel’s anger, leading her to retaliate by labeling Sydney and the dorks as traitors. Using her influence, Rachel orchestrates their eviction from the Vortex, forcing them to relocate to a nearby motel. Despite these setbacks, Sydney remains determined to continue her campaign and bring change to the campus.
As the election approaches, Rachel takes more drastic measures to undermine Sydney. She hires a hacker to infect Sydney’s campaign files with a virus called “The Poison Apple,” erasing all of her hard work. Left with no other option, Sydney spends the entire night in the library recreating her materials from scratch. Exhausted and sleep-deprived, she finishes just in time for the debate but falls asleep and nearly misses it. Tyler, who has been quietly supporting Sydney throughout her journey, wakes her with a kiss and helps her arrive just in time to participate.
During the debate, Sydney confidently presents her vision for a more inclusive and supportive campus community. Her heartfelt words and authenticity win over the audience, setting her apart from Rachel’s polished but insincere performance. The student body votes overwhelmingly in Sydney’s favor, making her the new student body president. Rachel’s defeat marks a turning point not only for Sydney but also for the entire campus.
In the aftermath of the election, Rachel faces consequences for her actions. Her years of cruelty, manipulation, and dishonesty are exposed, leading the Kappa sisters to strip her of her presidency and sorority membership. Meanwhile, Sydney focuses on rebuilding the Vortex with the help of her father and a team of construction workers. The film concludes with Sydney narrating how she and the dorks found happiness and belonging, living “dorkily ever after.”
