The Outworld emperor, Shao Kahn, launches a brutal invasion of Earthrealm by opening a forbidden portal, an act that defies the rules of Mortal Kombat. To solidify his hold, he resurrects Queen Sindel, the long-deceased mother of Princess Kitana, manipulating her soul to aid in his conquest. Thunder god Raiden, alongside Earthrealm’s defenders—Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage—rushes to confront Kahn. However, during the initial battle, Kahn kills Johnny Cage. Forced to retreat, the remaining warriors seek reinforcements to stop Kahn’s forces.

Sonya Blade enlists the help of her Special Forces partner, Jax, who has undergone cybernetic enhancements. Meanwhile, Kitana and Liu Kang set out to find Nightwolf, a shaman who holds knowledge crucial to defeating Kahn. Along the way, Scorpion ambushes them, abducting Kitana and delivering her to Kahn’s stronghold. Liu, now alone, presses on to locate Nightwolf.

Raiden seeks answers from the Elder Gods, questioning why Kahn was permitted to break the sacred rules and invade Earthrealm. The Elder Gods reveal conflicting paths forward. One insists that reuniting Kitana with Sindel will break Kahn’s power, while another claims that Kahn must be directly defeated. The gods challenge Raiden to reflect on his commitment to mortals and the sacrifices he is willing to make for their survival.

Liu finds Nightwolf, who introduces him to the mystical power of the Animality—a transformation that channels one’s inner strength into an animal form. To master this power, Liu must complete three spiritual tests. The first trial demands he confront his own self-esteem and courage. The second takes the form of temptation, embodied by Jade, a mysterious warrior who attempts to seduce him. Liu resists her advances, earning her respect, and she pledges to help him. Liu accepts Jade’s offer, and together they travel to reunite with Raiden and the rest of the Earthrealm warriors. The third test, shrouded in mystery, remains unexplored.

When the group gathers, Raiden reveals a shocking truth: he has relinquished his immortality to fight alongside them as an equal. Together, they devise a plan to infiltrate Outworld, rescue Kitana, and reunite her with Sindel, hoping to restore Sindel’s soul and close the portal linking the realms. Liu successfully rescues Kitana from her imprisonment, while the others incapacitate Sindel. However, Sindel, still under Kahn’s influence, escapes during a surprise ambush.

Jade’s true intentions come to light—she is a double agent working for Kahn. She betrays the group, but her failure to fully sabotage their mission enrages Kahn, who feeds her to a gargoyle as punishment. Meanwhile, Raiden reveals another startling secret: Shao Kahn is his brother, and their father is the disgraced Elder God, Shinnok. Raiden realizes that Shinnok has been orchestrating the invasion, supporting Kahn’s defiance of the rules.

The Earthrealm warriors press forward, confronting Kahn, Sindel, and the remaining generals of Outworld. Shinnok attempts to manipulate Raiden, urging him to betray his mortal allies and restore their family. Raiden refuses, choosing loyalty to Earthrealm over his divine lineage. In retaliation, Kahn strikes Raiden with a powerful energy blast, killing him.

Despite the loss, Jax, Sonya, and Kitana emerge victorious in battles against Kahn’s generals. Jax defeats the towering Motaro, Sonya triumphs over Ermac, and Kitana confronts her mother. In a tense showdown, Kitana defeats Sindel, breaking Kahn’s control over her soul. Meanwhile, Liu Kang faces Shao Kahn in a decisive battle.

During their fight, Liu taps into his Animality, transforming into a powerful creature. The transformation exposes Kahn’s vulnerability, revealing that he is now mortal—a consequence of violating the sacred rules. As Liu gains the upper hand, Shinnok intervenes to save his son, but his treachery is uncovered by two Elder Gods, who arrive to enforce the rules. They declare that the fate of Earthrealm will be decided in Mortal Kombat.

Liu defeats Kahn in the final battle, delivering a decisive blow that ends the emperor’s reign. The Elder Gods banish Shinnok to the Netherrealm for his betrayal, and Earthrealm is restored to its former state. Sindel, freed from Kahn’s influence, tearfully reunites with Kitana. The Elder Gods resurrect Raiden, granting him Shinnok’s former position as an Elder God. Before ascending to the immortal realm, Raiden urges the Earthrealm warriors to remain united and protect one another.

With Kahn defeated and peace restored, the Earthrealm warriors return home, their bonds strengthened by the trials they endured together.
