Fickman, A. (Director). (2006). She’s the Man [Film]. DreamWorks Pictures.

Viola Hastings is a passionate soccer player at Cornwall Prep, with dreams of playing for the North Carolina Tar Heels. However, her aspirations take a hit when the school cuts the girls’ soccer team. Determined to keep playing, Viola and her teammates attempt to join the boys’ team, only to be dismissed outright by the coach. To make matters worse, her boyfriend, Justin, sides with the coach, insisting that girls aren’t as skilled as boys. Frustrated and hurt, Viola breaks up with him, vowing to prove him wrong.

Meanwhile, her twin brother, Sebastian, has his own set of problems. Recently expelled from Cornwall for skipping classes, he is supposed to enroll at Illyria, an elite boarding school. However, instead of attending, he secretly leaves for London with his band, leaving Viola with an idea. Since they are nearly identical in appearance, she decides to take his place at Illyria, pose as her brother, and earn a spot on the boys’ soccer team to prove that girls can compete just as well. With the help of her stylist friend, Paul, she undergoes a transformation, cutting her hair, adopting a more masculine voice, and mastering male mannerisms before heading to Illyria.

Upon arriving, Viola meets her new roommate, Duke Orsino, the school’s soccer team captain. Tryouts are tough, and despite her efforts, she fails to impress Coach Dinklage, who assigns her to second string. Her awkward behavior makes it difficult to fit in with the boys, who view “Sebastian” as strange and socially inept. However, Paul stages an elaborate stunt at a local pizzeria, making it seem like “Sebastian” is incredibly popular with girls. This earns Viola newfound respect among her teammates, and Duke and the others start warming up to her.

Duke, who has a crush on the beautiful and popular Olivia Lennox, asks “Sebastian” to put in a good word for him. In exchange, he agrees to help “Sebastian” improve as a soccer player. As Viola trains and improves her game, Coach Dinklage takes notice and promotes her to first string. Meanwhile, Olivia starts developing feelings for “Sebastian,” intrigued by his sensitive and thoughtful nature—qualities she finds lacking in Duke. This unintentional love triangle becomes more complicated when Duke starts showing interest in Viola herself, unaware of her true identity.

At the Junior League carnival, where Viola is forced to volunteer by her mother, she unexpectedly shares a kiss with Duke at the kissing booth. He later confesses to “Sebastian” that he might be moving on from Olivia because he is starting to like Viola. Overjoyed but unable to reveal the truth, Viola keeps her feelings hidden. Olivia, on the other hand, tries to make “Sebastian” jealous by asking Duke on a date, which infuriates Viola, who assumes Duke is losing interest in her. When Olivia later confesses her true intentions, Viola encourages her to be upfront with “Sebastian” about her feelings.

The situation takes a drastic turn when the real Sebastian returns from London a day earlier than expected. Unaware of what’s been happening in his absence, he arrives at Illyria just as Olivia confesses her feelings and kisses him. Duke witnesses this and believes “Sebastian” has betrayed him. Furious, Duke kicks “Sebastian” out of their dorm, leading to further misunderstandings. Meanwhile, Viola oversleeps and misses the first half of the crucial soccer game against Cornwall. With no idea what’s going on, the real Sebastian is forced to play in her place but struggles since he lacks the skills Viola has developed.

At halftime, Viola finds Sebastian and quickly explains everything. They switch places again, and Viola returns to the field. However, Duke, still angry, refuses to work with her. Desperate to clear things up, Viola finally reveals her true identity to the entire stadium by pulling off her disguise. Shocked, Duke is speechless, and Coach Dinklage allows her to continue playing. Determined to prove herself, Viola helps Illyria win the match by scoring the final goal, humiliating Justin and the Cornwall team in the process.

Despite the victory, Duke remains hurt by Viola’s deception. She introduces Olivia to Sebastian, and the two quickly hit it off. Meanwhile, Viola and Sebastian’s divorced parents, who have been kept in the dark about their children’s schemes, finally reconnect and exchange contact information, agreeing to be better co-parents. Viola, hopeful that Duke will forgive her, invites him to her upcoming debutante ball. However, he remains distant and doesn’t respond, leaving her heartbroken.

At the ball, Viola struggles to enjoy herself, fearing Duke will never forgive her. She distracts herself by assisting Olivia, who arrives with Sebastian as her date. Paul, ever the loyal friend, offers to be Viola’s date, and her mother surprises her with a dress that matches her style. As the event continues, Viola steps outside for fresh air, only to find Duke waiting for her. He admits that he does have feelings for her but insists on complete honesty moving forward. She promises no more deception.

Inside, Olivia is escorted by Sebastian, Monique arrives with Justin, and Viola and Duke make a grand entrance together. The moment is both a victory and a relief, as Viola finally gets to be herself. As the film ends, Viola and Duke are happily playing soccer together on Illyria’s team, proving once and for all that talent knows no gender.
