Matias O’Brien, a struggling tech enthusiast, stumbles upon a sleek MacBook Pro left behind at a cyber café. The unassuming discovery feels like a small stroke of luck, a silver lining to his turbulent days. Little does he know, this laptop holds a gateway to a sinister underworld. As he brings it home, eager to set it up, he logs into a Skype call with his close friends—Damon, the insightful techie; A.J., the conspiracy theorist; Lexx, the brash and opinionated gamer; Serena, the empathetic soul; and Nari, Serena’s girlfriend.

The atmosphere is light-hearted until strange messages begin to flood in from someone named “Erica.” As Matias hesitantly responds, the tone grows more ominous. The sender, who calls themselves “Norah,” demands the return of the laptop with an unsettling urgency. Before Matias can even process the situation, another username, “Charon68,” appears, sending cryptic and chilling messages. A.J. quickly puts the pieces together, realizing that the laptop is connected to the dark web—a space where the shadows of humanity thrive. The mention of “trepanation” in Charon68’s messages sends shivers down their spines. Matias, overwhelmed and unsure, cuts off communication.

As he delves deeper into the laptop’s files, Matias uncovers a hidden folder filled with snuff films—graphic videos of people being tortured and killed. Among them is a video that traces back to the address of a missing 17-year-old girl, Erica Dunne. The revelation leaves Matias horrified, but the nightmare escalates when he receives a video call from his deaf girlfriend, Amaya. To his horror, the person on the other end is not Amaya but Norah, the sinister owner of the laptop. Norah threatens Amaya’s life and demands that Matias return the laptop, warning him that any contact with the police will end in bloodshed.

Terrified and desperate to keep Amaya safe, Matias tries to downplay the situation, claiming to his friends that this is part of an alternate reality game he is designing. However, Nari’s sharp instincts make her skeptical of his explanation. Meanwhile, Matias attempts to guide Amaya to safety, instructing her to head to a nearby subway station. As Amaya unknowingly moves closer to danger, Matias removes cryptocurrency from Norah’s account, bargaining for Amaya’s life and the freedom of Erica, whose fate remains unclear.

The tension in the group peaks as Matias reveals the truth to his friends, their shock giving way to fear. Just as they begin to understand the gravity of the situation, the Skype call is invaded by more “Charons,” shadowy figures of the dark web. Their control over the group becomes evident as they unleash a series of horrifying attacks. The first victim is Lexx, who is thrown from a rooftop in a gruesome scene broadcast to the others. Then comes A.J.’s turn. Using a deepfake video, the Charons make it appear that A.J. is planning a mass shooting. As a swatting team storms A.J.’s house, the Charons manipulate his computer to play the sound of a gun being loaded. The police, believing A.J. is armed, fatally shoot him.

The Charons’ psychological warfare deepens when they force Serena into an impossible decision: save either her terminally ill mother or her girlfriend, Nari. Refusing to choose, Serena tries to defy them, but the Charons execute all three—Serena, Nari, and one of their own members to maintain their twisted charade. The brutality leaves the remaining survivors shattered.

As Matias races to piece together a plan, Damon works feverishly to copy the laptop’s files, hoping to expose the Charons’ atrocities. However, the Charons are always one step ahead. They plant false evidence implicating Matias in Erica’s disappearance, creating a deepfake video of him kidnapping her and dragging her unconscious body into his apartment. Damon, realizing the Charons’ endgame, uncovers the horrifying truth: Matias was lured into taking the laptop so the Charons could frame him and his friends for their crimes.

Damon’s revelation comes too late. The Charons infiltrate his system, and one of them strings him up in his closet, staging his death as a suicide. Another Charon types out a fabricated confession and suicide note on Damon’s laptop, cementing their manufactured narrative. Meanwhile, Matias, frantic to save Amaya, discovers that the Charons have hacked their messages, leading her astray. His heart sinks as he watches helplessly, seeing Amaya lured into a dark warehouse where she is abducted.

The final blow comes when the Charons hold a macabre vote to decide Matias’ fate. The verdict is swift: death. As Matias runs to find Amaya, a van barrels toward him. The impact is devastating, leaving Matias lifeless in the street.

In the aftermath, the screen shifts to Erica, who awakens in a cold, sterile room. Disoriented and pleading for help, she discovers a chilling detail—a hole in her skull, evidence of the grotesque trepanation procedure mentioned earlier. Her cries for help go unanswered as the camera pulls back, revealing multiple screens displaying live feeds of the Charons. Each figure, anonymous behind their cameras, celebrates the successful execution of their sadistic game.

The story closes with a haunting image: the entire ordeal, every gruesome moment, had been broadcast live to an audience hidden in the darkest corners of the internet. The Charons revel in their depravity, their faceless existence a testament to the horrors humanity can conjure in the shadows.
