In Moscow, former CIA operative Jack McClane is imprisoned after being accused of assassinating a corrupt official. His father, NYPD Detective John McClane, learns of his son’s situation and flies to Russia to help. Meanwhile, a political prisoner and former billionaire, Yuri Komarov, is offered a deal for his freedom if he provides a file containing incriminating evidence against Viktor Chagarin, a powerful Russian official and rival. Komarov refuses, setting in motion a sequence of events that brings father and son together.
As John arrives in Moscow, a violent attack on the courthouse occurs, orchestrated to eliminate Komarov before he can reveal damaging information. Jack, secretly working undercover for the CIA, uses the chaos to break Komarov out of custody. However, John inadvertently complicates the escape when he intervenes, unaware of his son’s covert mission. Jack is visibly annoyed by his father’s interference but is forced to work with him as they flee Moscow under heavy fire from Chagarin’s mercenaries.
The chase escalates across the city as the McClanes commandeer vehicles to evade their pursuers. A ruthless henchman, Alik, leads the pursuit, causing significant destruction in the process. Despite the chaos, Jack and John manage to escape, taking Komarov to a safe house. The tension between father and son grows, as Jack resents his father’s intrusion into his mission, but they are forced to work together to protect Komarov.
At the safe house, Jack’s CIA contact introduces Komarov’s daughter, Irina, who they believe is working to secure the secret file. However, Irina betrays them, revealing her allegiance to Chagarin and Alik. Komarov, Jack, and John are taken captive, but the McClanes manage to overpower their captors during an intense firefight and escape once again.
Realizing Komarov is still the key to their mission, Jack and John team up to stop him from falling back into enemy hands. They steal a car full of weapons and drive to Pripyat, Ukraine, where Komarov claims the incriminating file is stored in a safe deposit box. Upon arriving, the McClanes discover a heavily armed operation underway, with men loading vehicles with containers. John grows suspicious, realizing something far more significant than a secret file is at stake.
Inside the vault, Jack and John uncover the truth: there is no file. Instead, the safe deposit box is a gateway to a hidden vault from the Chernobyl era, containing €1 billion worth of weapons-grade uranium. Komarov reveals his true intentions—stealing the uranium to sell on the black market for enormous profits. Komarov kills Alik to tie up loose ends and contacts Chagarin to gloat. Shortly after, one of Komarov’s men assassinates Chagarin in his sauna, eliminating another obstacle.
As John and Jack confront Komarov in the vault, he pretends to welcome their rescue, but Jack quickly pieces together the full scheme. Komarov’s daughter, Irina, arrives with reinforcements to protect her father. A chaotic battle ensues as Komarov attempts to escape with the uranium. Jack follows Komarov, while John focuses on stopping Irina, who is attempting to flee in a heavily armed Mil Mi-26 helicopter.
John sneaks aboard the helicopter’s rear compartment as Irina uses the helicopter’s mounted guns to target Jack on the ground. In a desperate move, John attaches a truck to the helicopter with a heavy chain and drives the vehicle out of the cargo hold, destabilizing the aircraft. Meanwhile, Komarov taunts Jack, claiming he will enjoy watching his father die. Enraged, Jack hurls Komarov off a rooftop and into the spinning helicopter blades, killing him instantly. The impact throws John from the truck and back into the building.
Reunited on the rooftop, John and Jack prepare to escape as Irina, now out of ammunition, makes a last-ditch suicide attack. She rams the helicopter into the building, intent on killing the McClanes. John and Jack leap from the rooftop into a large pool of water below as the helicopter crashes and explodes, killing Irina.
With their mission complete and their relationship mended, John and Jack return to the United States. They are welcomed home by an overjoyed Lucy, marking a new chapter for the McClane family.
