Unfriended (2014) Film Plot
Levin, L., & Pellington, L. (Directors). (2014). Unfriended [Film]. Universal Pictures.

The film opens with Blaire Lily (Shelley Hennig), a high school senior, browsing the internet on her laptop in her bedroom. She stumbles across an unsettling video of her classmate, Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), who died by suicide exactly one year prior. Laura had shot herself in public after an anonymous user uploaded an embarrassing video of her drunkenly collapsing and soiling herself at a party. The clip went viral, leading to relentless bullying and cyber harassment. Blaire pauses the video, clearly disturbed by the reminder of Laura’s tragic fate.

Shortly afterward, Blaire joins a Skype group chat with her boyfriend, Mitch Roussel, and their friends: Jess Felton, Adam Sewell, Ken Smith, and Val Rommel. The group banters casually until they notice an uninvited participant in their chat: an anonymous user labeled “billie227.” Assuming it’s a glitch, they try to eject the user, but the system doesn’t allow them to remove it. The group begins to grow uneasy when the mystery participant starts messaging them directly.

Simultaneously, Blaire receives a series of private messages on Facebook from an account linked to Laura Barns, despite Laura’s death. Initially dismissing it as a cruel prank, Blaire grows alarmed when the messages reference deeply personal moments only Laura would know. The messages demand that Blaire and her friends stay in the Skype call, warning them not to leave or hang up. Skeptical, the group assumes someone hacked Laura’s account. Ken, the tech-savvy member of the group, attempts to trace the mysterious “billie227” user but is unsuccessful.

The situation escalates when billie227 starts controlling their computers, sharing files and photos that each group member would prefer to remain private. Laura’s Facebook page updates with a cryptic post warning the group not to hang up, but Val—annoyed and skeptical—disregards the warning and disconnects from the call. Moments later, Val’s account begins uploading disturbing photos of her passed out at a party, covered in vomit. The group scrambles to delete the images, but they can’t stop the posts. Suddenly, Val rejoins the call, sitting frozen and unresponsive in front of her camera.

The group watches helplessly as Val’s webcam captures her demise in real time. Police arrive at Val’s home, and they overhear a report stating she appears to have died by self-inflicted means, though the group knows otherwise. Panic sets in as they realize that billie227 has the power to harm them physically. Blaire and Mitch speculate whether Laura’s spirit might be responsible, though the others remain skeptical.

Ken, the group’s self-proclaimed hacker, devises another plan to end the chaos by trying to shut down billie227’s connection. However, his efforts backfire. Suddenly, Ken’s camera begins to malfunction. The group watches in horror as his webcam captures him being attacked by an unseen force. Moments later, his face is shoved into a blender running on the kitchen counter, killing him gruesomely.

Billie227 insists on playing a game of “Never Have I Ever,” revealing each group member’s darkest secrets one by one. It becomes clear that Laura’s suicide was not a random act but the culmination of the group’s collective cruelty. The revelations escalate tensions among the friends. For instance, it’s revealed that Adam once cheated on his girlfriend, Jess, with Blaire, and that Jess started a vicious rumor about Laura in school. Mitch also learns that Blaire sent an intimate photo of herself to Adam, despite their relationship. As their betrayals are laid bare, the group begins turning on one another.

Now utterly terrified, the remaining group members attempt to flee the chat, but billie227 prevents them from disconnecting. Blaire and Mitch beg for mercy, promising they had nothing to do with the video that drove Laura to kill herself. Blaire frantically denies her involvement, claiming Mitch uploaded the video. Soon afterwards Mitch stab himself with a knife plunging the knife into his eye while Blaire screams in agony.

Left alone, Blaire begs for forgiveness, insisting she has learned from her mistakes. Billie227 remains silent but uploads one final message: the complete video, exposing that it was Blaire who was holding the camera that recorded Laura’s humiliation. The video confirms that Blaire was the primary culprit in driving Laura to her breaking point. As Blaire sobs, Billie227 taunts her with a countdown timer.

When the timer expires, Blaire’s laptop lid slams shut, and the screen goes black. The film concludes with Blaire’s screams echoing in the darkness, implying that Laura’s vengeful spirit has exacted her final revenge.
